A Safe and Effective Treatment Option for Long COVID

Treatment begins by lying down on a padded therapy table, where EECP compression cuffs (similar to blood pressure cuffs) are wrapped around your calves, thighs and lower hips

Long COVID describes signs and symptoms that continue or develop after four weeks of an acute COVID-19 infection. Common symptoms of Long COVID may include fatigue, chest pain, brain fog, headaches and difficulty breathing. These post-COVID conditions may also be known as long-haul COVID, post-acute COVID-19, long-term effects of COVID, or chronic COVID. An FDA approved treatment called Enhanced External Counter-pulsation (EECP®) has been used in medical settings for years with cardiology patients to treat similar symptoms like shortness of breath and chest pain. Flow Therapy is treating patients from several leading healthcare systems including patients with Long COVID in Texas, Arizona, and North Carolina, with significant results:

    • Chest pain symptoms improved in 97% of patients

    • Fatigue improved in 88% of patients

    • Walking distance improved in 83% of patients

    • Breathing difficulty improved in 63% of patients

Juan Cabrera, M.D, at UT Southwestern Medical Center commented, “These findings are important, as over 50% of post-COVID patients suffer from lingering long-term symptoms. These statistically significant findings using validated clinical tools provide the first glimpse of hope as one potential treatment strategy for persistent symptoms after COVID.”

How EECP Works

EECP® is a noninvasive treatment that imitates the benefits of passive exercise without straining the heart. Using advanced counter pulsation technology synced up to one’s heartbeat, EECP Flow Therapy treatments increase the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart, which results in the widening and creation of new, small blood vessels in the heart. This leads to improved circulation, increased cardiac capacity, reduced shortness of breath, and increased stamina. The increase in oxygenated blood flow throughout the body can restore the function of the organ systems impacted by COVID-19. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNTP9zf82oM

Sequential Inflation: When the heart is relaxed (diastole phase), the EECP cuffs inflate sequentially, squeezing from your calves toward your lower hips to create what’s known as a “retrograde aortic pressure wave.”

Simultaneous Deflation: When the heart beats (systole phase), the EECP cuffs deflate. This “counterpulsation” results in an increased supply of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle and a reduction in the heart’s workload.

Sachin A. Shah, PharmD, chief scientific officer of Flow Therapy, the leading provider of EECP treatments explained “Patients with Long COVID need viable treatment options. The results we’re seeing, indicate that EECP® appears to be a powerful and effective solution for these patients and potentially the best thing available.”
